Detroit/Ontario Underground Railroad Memorial (Hart Plaza)--Detroit MI

This memorial was commissioned by the civic group Detroit 300 as part of the city's 300th birthday celebration. This is one of two sculptures to commemorate the involvement of Detroit and Windsor and Michigan and Ontario with the Underground Railroad. The Raiload's "passengers" were slaves escaping from the South, led by "conductors." This detail from the sculpture shows the conductor pointing the way to Canada and freedom. The sculptor is Ed Dwight, who presented the Detroit and Windsor sculptures on October 20, 2001.
